The busy summer is coming to a close for the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) and everyone can now draw a breath before preparing for fall events. Within the month of August, there are some things to keep an eye out for, including the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) scholarship applications, American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting event news and the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout culmination and finale of the 2023 contest.
Each year, HYFA offers more than $200,000 worth of scholarships, and the largest giveaway happens during the AHA Annual Meeting. With 29 scholarships that will be given out following the fall application, this years recipients will be the most deserving. New this year, the Western States Hereford Association has moved their scholarship application to be housed alongside the other HYFA fall scholarships. The John Ascuaga Hereford Scholarship and Willard Wolf Scholarship are offered to those who are members of the Western States Hereford Association and will be given out at the Western States Hereford Show in Reno, Nev., each year. Applications for all scholarships will be due on Sept. 1. through Submittable.
The biggest bash of the summer was held in Madison, Wis., for the 2023 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash. “What I hope you can take from this conference, is to dream just a little bit bigger, and to know that there’s a lot of different opportunities out there,” said Rick Malir, president and founder of City Barbeque. Along with his wife Bonnie Coley-Malir, they created the Coley-Malir Leadership Endowment that makes this event possible each year.
