KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Landgren Ranch, Bartlett, Neb., claimed top honors in the Hereford carload show on Friday, Jan. 13, during the 2023 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, topped the pen-of-three bull show and Bill King Ranch, Moriarty, N.M., won the pen-of-three female show in the Denver Yards.

Cody Chabot, Sundance, Wyo.; Daniel Fawcett, Ree Heights, S.D.; and David Burns, Pikeville, Tenn., evaluated the Yards shows, which included 2 carloads, 13 bull pens and 14 heifer pens. A total of 97 Hereford cattle competed in the Yards.

Landgren Ranch’s champion carload of spring bull calves tipped the scales at an average weight of 1,143 pounds, and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.70. The group was sired by Green JCS Makers Mark 22, JDH AH Lincoln 106H ET, H The Profit 8426 ET and BR Belle Air 6011. The reserve champion carload and junior bull calf carload was exhibited by Jensen Bros., Courtland, Kan. The group was sired by JDH AH Benton 8G ET, KJ BJ 309C Leader 182F, R Leader 6964, BCC Dominator 619D, and EXR Benchmark 8240 ET. The average weight of the load was 1,255 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.62.

Champion honors for the pen-of-three bull show went to Colyer Herefords, with the group first winning the junior bull calf division. The calves were sired by Loewen Genesis G16 ET. They averaged 1,430 pounds, and had a calculated WDA of 3.92. Jensen Bros. won the spring bull calf division before being selected reserve champion pen-of-three bulls with a group sired by UPS Harvester 9985 and JDH AH Benton 8G ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,147 pounds and calculated a 3.82 WDA.

The grand champion pen of females and champion junior heifer calf pen was exhibited by Bill King Ranch. The group was sired by Loewen Genesis G16 ET and posted an average weight of 942 pounds with a 2.94 WDA. Haxton Hoffman, Thedford, Neb., showed the reserve champion pen of three females and the champion pen of spring heifer calves. These heifers were sired by H The Profit 8426 ET with an average weight of 803 pounds and a WDA of 3.18.
