KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Luke and Chase Harker, Hope, Ind., showed the grand champion steer and Kaylie Shelton, Frederick, Md., exhibited the reserve grand champion steer at the 2017 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Louisville, Ky., July 19. The steer show was sponsored by Eby Trailers, Blue Ball, Pa.

Judge Cody Sankey, Economy, Ind., sorted 109 steers to find the winner.


Harker’s grand champion steer, AF Poe 11T, weighed in at 1,260 lb. for a WDA of 2.67, and is a son of LSW WCC About Time X06.
Shelton’s reserve grand champion steer, GEF Herf 1D, weighed in at 1,265 lb. for a WDA of 2.67, and is a son of H Excel 8051 ET.
At check-in, ultrasound data was collected on the progress steers, including ribeye area, backfat thickness and marbling score, and a yield grade and carcass weight were estimated.


Based on that data, Hannah Harrell, Argos, Ind., earned champion carcass steer honors with her 1,220-lb. steer by KJ CJJ 618U Chevy 454Y. The steer scanned with a ribeye area of 15.4, 0.37 backfat, 4.6 marbling score with a calculated 2.05 yield grade and a carcass weight of 750 lb.


Lauren Gatz, Fairview, Kan., won reserve champion carcass steer with her 1,265-lb. steer by KJ 175S Wonder 064B ET. The steer scanned with a 15.6 ribeye area, 0.37 backfat and a 4.6 marbling score, resulting in a 2.12 yield grade and 785-lb. carcass.
