Faces of Leadership. What is the first thing that comes to mind? Leaders? faces? Maybe the faces associated with leaders? Potentially, but let’s take that a step further. Is it a chance to see cool places, travel to places you may have never seen, or even see your show friends without a show? The truth of it is, Faces of Leadership (FOL) means something different for each and every person who attends.

My first FOL was in 2011 in Lancing, Mich., and I had been looking forward to going all summer. My mom dropped me off and just like that, I was nervous. Tons of people, no cows to escape to, and only a couple of people I knew. Today, that’s my favorite part. And no, my mother does not still drop me off.

The things that originally posed as concerns turned out to be some of the most beneficial aspects. We all enjoy going to JNHE to show, participate in different contests and hang out with our friends. But for me, the true benefit of FOL is found in the one of a kind experiences it offers.

Not only does the conference move to different parts of the country, but we are all in the same spot. All we need to worry about are the activities at hand and having fun while learning about becoming stronger leaders. We get to truly focus on not only getting to know each other but getting to know ourselves a little better.

One of the most impactful things that I have taken from FOL is that being a leader comes in many different forms. Being a leader is not always about being the spokesperson at the front of that group that everyone looks to for answers. There are different types of leaders and a strong correlation can be found with different personality types.

I am very excited about some of the opportunities we have lined up for this year’s Faces of Leadership. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will play a large role in the success of several leadership activities. We will also tour Sullivan Supply and hear from a very successful Volleyball coach about his approach on team building and collaboration.

Not only will this be a fun-filled couple of days, but more importantly, a unique opportunity to learn from some of the greatest leaders out there.
