October is a busy month for the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) and the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA), with many exciting events to showcase NJHA members and opportunities to support the Hereford youth programs. The Keystone International Livestock Exposition will be taking place at the beginning of the month, highlighting the best of the breed within the northeast. The American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting and Educational Forum will be held in Kansas City, Mo., from Oct. 21-23 at the Loews Downtown Hotel. During that event the winners of awards in the 2022 NJHA Fed Steer Shootout Contest will be awarded, as well as more than $165,000 in scholarships will be awarded to 28 different scholarship recipients on behalf of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). In conjunction with this event, the American Royal Livestock Show hosts the junior and open Hereford Show for exhibitors to display their genetics.
The rules and regulations for the 2023 VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) are now available and a preliminary schedule will be coming soon. Take note within the rules of an adjustment to the JNHE Steer Show Rules, and at the 2023 JNHE, “all steers will be required to be parent verified to both sire and dam.”
During the American Royal will be the Ladies of the Royal Sale on Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting a special Lot 1 dedicated to HYFA and the NJHA, selling the Choice of the Champions. The high bidder will receive not only the historic street sign on display at both the AHA office and the front of the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) showring, but also the choice of being the named sponsor for either the Grand Champion Horned or Polled Female at the 2023 JNHE in Madison, Wis. Proceeds from that lot will go to ensuring the success of the 2023 JNHE, Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash.
HYFA’s Foundation 1 Campaign was started in 2017, by Sierra Ranches of Modesto, Calif., where they chose to dedicate 1% of their sale proceeds to continue the growth of HYFA’s mission of scholarship, leadership, education and research. This year the Jensen family in Courtland, Kan., have stepped up to join the campaign and will be donating a percentage of their sale proceeds to HYFA. The Chosen Sale will be Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. CST, at Sanders Ranch, Louisburg, Kan., go take a look and support the sale when you are in town for the AHA Annual Meeting. Thank you to Jensen Bros. for their support.
The Foundation 1 Campaign continues to grow and each year as more and more donors come together with a percentage of their sales and is making a huge impact as we work together to strengthen the pillars for National Junior Hereford Association members and the next generation of the cattle industry.
