The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) is not slowing down this season. The Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash and Faces of Leadership conference are both setting up for an exciting and fun-filled summer. Leading up to these staple events, national and regional shows are prepping juniors for the largest stage in Madison, Wis., and the next leaders of the industry are getting ready to “Prepare You for Your Future,” in Columbus, Ohio.
The month of May is filled with dates and deadlines to keep in mind leading through this busy summer. Do not miss a single update or change, follow along with the NJHA and Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) on their social media channels.

Rett Blume, Pierre, S.D., was the junior division champion in the Apr. 15 carcass and live cattle evaluation contest at HRC Feed Yards LLC in Scott City, Kan. Pecos Worrell, Harper, Texas, was the winner in the senior division. Each won a mineral feeder sponsored by Priefert. The evaluation contest was part of the third annual National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) Fed Steer Shootout Field Day. It is a highlight of participating in the Fed Steer Shootout, which enables NJHA members to send single-steer entries or pens of three steers to feed at HRC Feed Yards. Along with discovering how their cattle perform in the feedlot and on the rail, participants learn through a series of online educational sessions, including the chance to become certified for Beef Quality Assurance.

A new rule for the steer show will take effect during the 2023 VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Madison, Wis., July 8-14. This rule was voted on and installed by the NJHA board. The new rule reads as follows:

The 2023 Faces of Leadership Conference is heading to Columbus, Ohio, July 23-26. This years theme, “Prepare YOU, for your Future,” focuses on leadership development, with guest speakers like Eddie Slowkowski and Marlene Eik. A focus on the consumer and from farm to plate will be highlighted with conversations with the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, tours of the Select Sires operation and hands-on learning in the Ohio State University (OSU) meat labs. To add to the fun, a tour of the OSU football stadium, as well as an evening at the Columbus Zoo and waterpark will be followed by a night with a barn party and dance to close an amazing adventure in Ohio. Registration will be opening this month, so make sure to take advantage of this learning opportunity.
