KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Landgren Ranch, Bartlett, Neb., exhibited the champion Hereford carload on Friday, Jan. 12, during the 2024 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. Coyote Ridge Ranch, LaSalle, Colo., claimed top honors in the pen-of-three bull show and Jensen Bros., Courtland, Kan., exhibited the best pen-of-three female pen in the Denver yards.

Blake Ochsner, Torrington, Wyo.; Daniel Fawcett, Ree Heights, S.D.; and David Burns, Pikeville, Tenn., sorted the shows in the yards, including 3 carloads, 20 bull pens and 18 heifer pens. A total of 138 Hereford cattle competed in the yards.

Landgren Ranch’s champion carload of spring bull calves saw an average weight of 1,168 pounds, and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.97. The group was sired by Green JCS Makers Mark 22 and JDH AH Lincoln 106H ET. The reserve champion carload and junior bull calf carload was exhibited by Harvie Ranching, Olds, Alberta. The group was sired by NJW 16G 254G Ridge 5J, NJW PMH Commitment 137J, Harvie OVHF Hudson ET 174, Harvie OVHF Empower ET 5, NJW 133A 199B Cowboss 138, and NJW 202C 81E Steward 98G. The average weight of the group was 1,213 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.47.

Coyote Ridge Ranch won the junior bull calf division before being selected as grand champion pen-of-three bulls with a group sired by NJW 202C173DSteadfast 156, RST Final Print 0016 and NJW 281F 168C Tuff 10H. The pen weighed an average of 1,157 pounds and calculated a 3.43 WDA. Reserve champion honors for the pen-of-three bull show went to Chapman Land and Cattle, Nunnelly, Tenn., with the group winning the senior bull calf division. The calves were sired by RST Final Print 0016 and NJW 133A 6589 Manifest 87G. They averaged 1,497 pounds, and had a calculated WDA of 3.62. 

Jensen Bros. showed the grand champion pen of three females and the champion pen of junior heifer calves. These heifers were sired by UPS Harvester 9985 with an average weight of 918 pounds and a WDA of 2.96. The reserve champion pen of females and reserve champion junior heifer calf pen was exhibited by Bill King Ranch, Moriarty, N.M. The group was sired by C Key West 0065, C 8086 Sancho 1084 ET and C GKB Guardian 1015 ET and posted an average weight of 1,012 pounds with a 2.81 WDA.
