Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University faculty member and Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Convention presenter, took a few moments to discuss the importance of the BIF Annual Convention with the American Hereford Association (AHA) team.

Weaber presented a summary of the morning general session, titled “What You Heard.” The general session presenters covered the progress and challenges the beef industry faces in regards to genomic technology.

“As we think about using genomic tools, there is a real opportunity to change the rate of genetic progress,” Weaber said. “That change in genetic progress has implications to us, not only as individual breeds, but as individual breeders.”

“If competitors adopt the tools and make rapid genetic change to a set of traits or indexes and we don’t also keep up, then there becomes a gap between the genetic potential in what they are producing and marketing compared to what we have available as producers,” he continued.
