KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Lillie Skiles, Dalhart, Texas, and her heifer NCC 743 Breckyn C1857 ET won the polled owned female show and Rebecca Moore, Madill, Okla., won the horned owned female show with BK Cool Kid 5052C at the 2017 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Louisville, Ky., July 21.
Chan Phillips of Maysville, Ky., and associate Ernie Wallace, Scotts City, Mo., judged the open show with 255 horned heifers and 702 polled heifers exhibited.
The owned polled female show was sponsored by Lowderman Cattle Company, Macomb, Ill. Hoffman Ranch, Thedford, Neb., sponsored the owned horned female show.
The reserve grand champion owned polled heifer banner went to Brooke and Ben Jensen, Courtland, Kan., with KJ BJ 339A Coco Creme 746D ET. Lille Skiles, Dalhart, Texas, and her heifer H FHF 4075 Rita 625 ET, took home reserve grand champion honors in the owned horned heifer show.
Skiles’ champion heifer, a Jan. 28, 2016, daughter of CRR About Time 743, won division IX and showed with expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 3.9; weaning weight (WW) 48; yearling weight (YW) 76; milk (MM) 22; milk and growth (M&G) 46; fat (FAT) -0.02; ribeye area (REA) 0.45; and marbling (MARB) -0.04.
Moore’s heifer, a Sept. 9, 2015, daughter of H/TSR/CHEZ/Full Throttle ET, won division VI and showed with EPDs of BW 3.9, WW 57, YW 93, MM 26, M&G 54, FAT 0.00, REA 0.77 and MARB -0.06.
Jensen’s reserve grand polled female is a Sept. 9, 2016, daughter of H/TSR/CHEZ/Full Throttle ET. She showed with EPDs of BW 3.1, WW 56, YW 88, MM 27, M&G 55, FAT -0.03, REA 0.61 and MARB -0.02. She also took champion honors in division II and was named the reserve champion bred-and-owned female.
Skiles’ reserve grand horned female was first named champion in division V. The Feb. 18, 2016, daughter of HH Advance 4075B showed with EPDs of BW 2.7, WW 62, YW 101, MM 28, M&G 59, FAT 0.02, REA 0.60 and MARB 0.38.
Payton Vogel, Hartley, Iowa, was named the junior premier breeder and junior premier exhibitor. Adult premier breeder honors went to Sullivan Ranch, Hillsboro, Texas.
Winning the GKB Super States contest were the states of Maryland and Texas. Split into small states (less than 25 head of cattle at the JNHE) and large states (more than 25 head), each state earns points for juniors’ placing in the show-ring and in other contests throughout the week. Maryland won the small states division and Texas won the large states category.
Nebraska exhibited the best state group of five. Perks Ranch, Rockford, Ill., exhibited the adult breeder group of three and Brooke Jensen, Courtland, Kan., exhibited the junior breeder group of three. The champion female get-of-sire group was sired by BR Copper 124Y.
