KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matheny Herefords, Mays Lick, Ky., won the pen-of-three female show on Thursday, Jan. 5, during the 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla. Burns Farms, Pikeville, Tenn., claimed top honors in the pen-of-five bull show, and GKB Cattle, Desdemona, Texas, grabbed the pen-of-three bull banner.
Sam Shaw, Caldwell, Idaho; Bruce Thomas, Gold Creek, Mont.; and Jeff Gooden, Oak Grove, Mo., evaluated the pen show, which included nine female pens, three pen-of-five bull entries and seven pen-of-three bull entries for a total of 51 Hereford cattle.
Champion honors in the pen-of-three bull show went to GKB Cattle, with the group first winning the yearling bull division. In recognition for their champion pen of bulls, GKB Cattle received the second annual Arlo Janssen Memorial Award in remembrance of longtime Hereford exhibitor and herdsman, Arlo Janssen. The champion pen of three was sired by JCS GKB 240 Clayton 6034, CSF Ramsey Crossfit 4892 and GKB 9279 Extra Deep 195C ET, and the group averaged 2,080 pounds with a calculated weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.92.
Buck Cattle Co., Madill, Okla., won champion pen-of-three senior bull calves before being selected as the reserve grand champion pen with a group sired by JDH AH Standout 16G ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,693 pounds with a 3.51 WDA.
The grand champion pen-of-three females and pen of champion junior heifer calves was exhibited by Matheny Herefords. The group was sired by GO King E33 and posted an average weight of 828 pounds with a 2.40 WDA.
Delaney Herefords, Lake Benton, Minn., showed the reserve grand champion pen-of-three females, which also took reserve champion honors in the junior heifer calf division. These heifers were sired by RST Final Print 0016, NJW Long Haul 36E ET and UPS Entice 9365 ET. The pen weighed an average of 791 pounds and measured a 2.46 WDA.
Burns Farms brought home the champion pen-of-five bulls with their champion pen of spring bull calves. The winning entry was sired by CHF Closing Bell 240 9115 ET, NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D ET, KLD RW Marksman D87 ET, Boyd Power Surge 9024 and 5C Deadliest Catch 1930. The bulls averaged 884 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.41.
The reserve champion pen-of-five and champion junior bull calf pen went to Delaney Herefords. The calves were sired by JDH AH Standout 16G ET, UPS Entice 9365 ET and JDH AH Prominent 21G ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,176 pounds with a 3.48 WDA.
