In conjunction with the American Hereford Association (AHA) annual meeting attendees can take part in the educational forum on Friday, October 22. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. the event will kick-off with Tom Field, Ph.D., Paul Engler Chair of Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Following the first session Kevin Good, Vice President of Industry Relations and Analysis at CattleFax; Scott Bennett, Director of Congressional Relations for the American Farm Bureau Federation; and Dr. Scott Nordstrom, Director of New Product Development for Merck Animal Health will each deliver a presentation.
These sessions will provide a deeper analysis of current industry topics that are relevant to Hereford breeders.

Session 1 | Tom Field, Ph.D. – Paul Engler Chair of Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program

Tom Field, Ph.D., serves the people of Nebraska as the Director of the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program and holder of the Engler Chair in Entrepreneurship at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. An enthusiastic advocate for free enterprise, the potential of young people and opportunities in both agriculture and rural communities, Tom is an internationally recognized educator and innovator who has the ability to connect the dots between people, industries, and ideas. A fifth generation cattleman who is partnership in a family cow-calf business in western Colorado, he also authors the column “Out of the Box’, consults and advises a number of enterprises and organizations, and is a sought after speaker who challenges and inspires audiences to lead their organizations to excellence by asking the right questions, seeking solutions beyond conventional wisdom, and unleashing the power of focused creativity. He and his wife Laura and their family live near Raymond, NE. Tom is a native Coloradoan and earned his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees at Colorado State University.

Session 2 | Kevin Good – VP of Industry Relations; CattleFax

Industry Outlook: The Impact on Producers

Improvements in beef quality and consistency over the last 30 years have led to the added demand for beef in the marketplace. Take a look at the cattle industry from a historical viewpoint and gain perspective on the future trajectory of the industry. This session will provide insight on supply, demand, trade, leverage, competitive meats and price for the producer of today and tomorrow.

Kevin Good grew up on a purebred cow/calf operation and graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. While at Kansas State, he was a member of both the meats and livestock judging teams. Kevin began working with CattleFax in 1982. Today, he is Vice President of Industry Relations and Analysis. His primary responsibilities include covering the Kansas/Oklahoma fed cattle market and working with corporate partners providing information and analysis to help them make profitable management and marketing decisions. Kevin has worked with many agricultural companies in helping them understand the changes taking place in the commodities industries, with an emphasis in animal proteins, and in particular, the beef industry. This includes analyzing interactions between supply, demand, production trends, weather and other factors affecting commodity markets. Kevin has a wife and three grown children.

Policy Awareness: A Look at the Present and the Future

Develop a better understanding of the current state of affairs in Washington, D.C., as it pertains to cattle ranchers. With the implications of COVID-19 over the last year, policy like many other facets of the agricultural industry has been affected and will be a force shaping the development of policy for the industry moving forward.

Scott Bennett serves as the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Director of Congressional Relations. His issue portfolio is comprised of livestock and related issues including GIPSA, cell-based proteins, gene-editing, and Livestock Mandatory Reporting.

 Scott also manages AFBF’s efforts on hemp, child nutrition/dietary guidelines, and agricultural research.

Scott has been with the American Farm Bureau Federation since October of 2018. Prior experience includes serving as Legislative Director for former House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, where Scott guided the Chairman through policy decisions as a conferee for the 2018 Farm Bill. Before working on the Hill, Scott was an Associate at Keys Group, a D.C.-based consulting and lobbying firm representing multi-national food and animal health companies. Scott was born and raised in Red House, VA on his family’s purebred Hereford, Angus, and Gelbvieh cattle operation, Knoll Crest Farm.

Scott’s work was critical through the COVID-19 pandemic for Farm Bureau, ensuring that cattle, hog, and contract poultry growers were given the necessary tools to weather the market volatility while working with industry, USDA, and Congress in the development of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). Scott is a regular source for Bloomberg News, the Western Ag Reporter, Brownfield Ag News and RFD-TV. He has been named as one of “Washington’s Top Lobbyists” by The Hill magazine for the past three years.

Scott earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Virginia Tech and resides in Arlington, Virginia. He serves on the Board for the Animal Agriculture Alliance, VA 4-H Foundation, the Virginia Angus Association and as the Chairman for the VA FFA Foundation Board.

Session 4 | Scott Nordstrom, DVM – Director of New Product Development; Merck Animal Health

Merck Animal Health and the AHA created a unique partnership to highlight the importance of animal health to maximize genetic potential and herd profitability. This partnership also provides a platform for members to keep current with the latest cattle health tools and opportunities. Dr. Scott Nordstrom specializes in immunology, vaccine research and development, as well as post-approval pharmaceutical and vaccine studies in cattle. He also provides training in the areas of infectious diseases, vaccinology, immunology and diagnostics. Dr. Nordstrom played principal roles in bringing numerous products to the US and Global cattle industry including Banamine® Transdermal and the Vista® vaccine line. He was also responsible for bringing numerous intranasal vaccines to market in the cattle industry. After practicing dairy and equine medicine privately for ten years, he joined Merck Animal Health Cattle Technical Services in 2001.
