Despite a rainy arrival last night, events kicked off today at the 2018 VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo in Grand Island, Neb. The sun was shining on a fun-filled day of reuniting with old friends and making new ones during check-in, speaking contests and interviews.

The morning began with an outstanding set of Hereford youth competing for scholarships. The American Hereford Association (AHA) and the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) can’t thank the scholarship sponsors enough for affording our youth the opportunity to pursue their educational goals.

Following interviews, youth gathered to present their illustrated speeches. The contest allowed exhibitors to showcase their creativity, industry knowledge and public speaking skills.

Meanwhile at Central Station, people and cattle check-in was sailing smoothly. Exhibitors were greeted with smiling junior board members and candidates to receive goodie bags and their complimentary VitaFerm t-shirts. Once the exhibitors were taken care of, it was time to check in cattle. Thanks to AHA staff, all steers and breeding cattle are ready for the upcoming show days.

The afternoon featured the debut of the Pen-to-Pen program startup. This unique opportunity teamed JNHE “protégées” and “mentors” for team-building activities. The overarching mission is to welcome and engage younger participants, as well as foster friendships sure to last well beyond this week.

Additionally, state queens gathered for a brief queen orientation. Little did they know, they would get to enjoy an enthusiastic skit performed by the National Hereford Women — yes, we have actresses in our midst.

All the while, families got settled into their stalls, played games with friends, and maybe even enjoyed a nice afternoon nap. For those needing retail therapy, the grand opening of all the shops and exhibits in the expo hall did not disappoint. In fact, Michelle Weber, read her new book, Harvey: A Ranch Birthday — she even stuck around for a book signing afterward. When you make your way to the expo hall this week, don’t forget to swing by the Shop Hereford and Hereford Prep booths for your latest and greatest in Hereford apparel.

Stay tuned on social media platforms each morning for “Good Morning Grand Island,” live from Fonner Park. Additional show coverage can also be found on our website all week.
