John McCurry, Burrton, Kan.; Cody Sankey, Economy, Ind.; and Brent Meeks, Taylor, Neb., evaluated the Yard shows, which included five carloads, 44 bull pens and 22 heifer pens. A total of 248 Herefords competed in the Yards while a standing-room-only audience looked on.
Hoffman Ranch’s champion carload of junior bull calves tipped the scales at an average weight of 1,148 pounds, and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.44 pounds. The group was sired by CRR 109 Catapult 322, BR Belle Air 6011, Churchill Pilgrim 632D ET, NJW 135U 10Y Hometown 27, NJW 78P 88X Cowboss 199B and H WR Sustainable 5511 ET. The group had an average scrotal measurement (SC) of 33.9 cm.
The reserve grand champion carload and reserve champion junior bull calf carload was exhibited by Delaney Herefords, Lake Benton, Minn. The group was sired by NJW 73S W18 Homegrown 8, NJW 135U 10Y Hometown 73, R Leader 6964, C Double Your Miles 6077 E, JDH Victor 719T 33Z ET and KCF Bennett Encore Z311 E. The average weight of the load was 1,193 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.44 pounds and an average scrotal measurement of 35.6 cm.
Champion honors for the bull pen-of-three show went to Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla., with the group first winning the junior bull calf division. The calves were sired by BR Belle Air. They averaged 1,335 pounds, and had a calculated WDA of 3.68 pounds with an average scrotal measurement of 42.3 cm.
Jensen Bros., Courtland, Kansas, won champion pen of spring bull calves before being selected reserve grand champion pen with a group sired by B&C Stock Option 6026D ET, R Leader 6964 and KJ BJ 319 Laramie 619D ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,185 pounds and calculated a 3.83 WDA with a 39.7 cm average scrotal measurement.
The grand champion pen of females and champion junior yearling heifer pen was exhibited by Pérez Cattle Co., Nara Visa, N.M. The group was sired by NJW 79Z 22Z Mighty 49C ET and posted an average weight of 1,383 pounds with a 2.01 WDA.
Krebs Ranch, Gordon, Neb., showed the reserve grand champion pen of three females and the champion junior heifer calf division. These heifers were sired by Churchill Kickstart 501C with an average weight of 942 pounds and a WDA of 2.71.
