This weekend, National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members and their families traveled to the Mile High City for the 2019 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). Day 2 of this award-winning event kicked off on the Hill with numerous contests and leadership activities.

Outstanding Hereford youth found themselves vying for $25,000 in scholarships to be awarded later in the week. Following interviews for these prestigious scholarships, the grounds were abuzz while families and their cattle got checked in.

Later in the afternoon, contestants put their beef industry knowledge to the test as they presented in the illustrated speech contest. This contest allows youth of all ages to deliver an educational presentation to a panel of judges as they enhance their own public speaking skills.

The Pen-to-Pen program was one of the major highlights of the day, as participating older and younger NJHA members were able to meet and connect. Emcee Rhett Laubach led the group through a series of leadership and team building activities, including a “best handshake” between mentors and mentees and a “name that tune” competition.

While fun was had by all, Laubach left the crowd with an overarching theme behind the program’s mission. “The Pen-to-Pen program is about networking, and networking is about leadership,” Laubach shared.

The Queen’s orientation was held at the majestic Brown Palace Hotel, where Hereford royalty had a chance to network and share experiences with other state queens from across the country. The evening concluded with the Meet the Candidates Reception and Panel, which provided an opportunity for the voting delegates to learn more about the candidates campaigning for a position on the junior board.

See everyone bright and early in the morning with your running shoes on for the JNHE 5K Race, sponsored by Rob-See-Co., LLC, Elkhorn, Neb.
