KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The day before the show kicked off for the week, Hereford juniors put their skills
and knowledge to the test in the judging and team fitting contests at the 22nd annual VitaFerm® Junior
National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, Mo., on July 5.

To start the day off, Chris Mullinix of Kansas State University helped facilitate the judging
contest and 600 juniors across the nation participated in the educational contest sponsored by Central Life
Sciences. The team from Nebraska won the senior team judging contest with a score of 214 points.. The
team included: Whitney Steckel, Taylor; Malina Lindstrom, Elm Creek; Trenedy Jones, Saint Edward and
Blake Bruns, North Platte. Second place honors went to Illinois with: Kyra Sayre, Arenzille; Cassie
Allscheid, Waterloo; Krista Allscheid, Waterloo and Nicholas Torrance, Media. Rounding out the top
three teams was Indiana with: Caleb Edens, Greenfield; Kylie Giesler, Ferdinand; Dylan Kottkamp,
Clayton and Sarah Lawrence, Avilla.

Jacob Johnson, Ruth, Miss., was crowned the senior high individual with a score of 214. Ethan
Hopkins, Winchester, Tenn., took second high individual, and Brandon Burks, Park City, Ky., took third
high individual.

At the end of the night, state associations sent in their best junior fitters to go head-to-head in the
fitting contest sponsored by Sullivan Supply. Each team consisted of one senior, one intermediate and one
junior or peewee exhibitor. The teams had 40 minutes to fit their animal and Matt and Alyssa Copeland,
Nara Visa, N.M., judged the contest.

Team Iowa: Kassidy Bremer, Redfield; Wyatt Monroe, Truro; and Kinnick Paulsen, Preston,
reigned supreme when the hair adhesive settled. Team Texas: Jarrett Worrell, Mason; Mason Allan,
Nocona; and Landry Allan, Nocona, was second. Rounding out the top three was Team Indiana: Gage
Tebo, Idaville; Collin Deatsman, Leesburg; and Landon Deatsman, Leesburg.

The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) is one of the largest, strongest and most active junior
cattle programs in the country. Over the years, members of this association have gone on to earn
international and domestic respect as models for youth organizational success. The NJHA, through its
extensive educational programs, continues to lay the foundation for the beef industry’s future leaders. The
traditions of the past coupled with the energy of today’s board of directors have created a progressive
approach to further develop a meaningful and educational association focus.
