KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Per z Cattle Co., Nara Visa, N.M., won the pen-of-three female show on Thursday, Jan. 6, during the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla., topped the pen-of-five bull show and Buck Cattle Co., Madill, Okla., took pen-of-three bull honors.
Sam Shaw, Caldwell, Idaho; Keith Phillips, Maysville, Ky.; and Bruce Thomas,, Gold Creek, Mont., evaluated the pen show, which included 11 female pens, four pen-of-five bulls and 16 pen-of-three bulls for a total of 101 Hereford cattle.
Champion honors for the pen-of-three bull show went to Buck Cattle Co., Madill, Okla., with the group first winning the senior bull calf division. In recognition for their champion pen of bulls, Buck Cattle Co. received the first Arlo Janssen Memorial Award in remembrance of long time Hereford exhibitor and herdsman, Arlo Janssen, Klamath Falls, Ore. The champion pen of 3 was sired by CHEZ/PUGH/HARA Logic 8815, LCX Perfecto11B ET and H The Profit 8426 ET and the group averaged 1,700 pounds and had a calculated WDA of 3.58.
Perks Ranch, Rockford, Ill., won champion pen-of-three spring bull calves before being selected as the reserve grand champion pen with a group sired by 2TK PERKS 5101 Chuma 8184 and BR Duncan 4142. The pen weighed an average of 1,185 pounds with a 3.95 WDA.
The grand champion pen-of-three females and champion junior yearling pen was exhibited by Per z Cattle Co. The group was sired by NJW 79Z 22Z Mighty 49C ET and /S Mandate 66589 ET and posted an average weight of 1,480 pounds with a 2.21 weight per day of age (WDA).
Matheny Herefords, May’s Lick, Ky., , showed the reserve grand champion pen-of-three females, which also took champion honors in the junior heifer calf division. These heifers were sired by BR Hutton 4030ET. The pen weighed an average of 875 pounds and measured a 2.60 WDA.
Express Ranches brought home the champion pen-of-five bulls with their champion junior bull calves. The entry was sired by BOYD 31Z Blueprint 6153, EXR Bankroll 8130 ET and NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D ET. The bulls averaged 1,230 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.69.
The reserve champion pen-of-five and reserve champion junior bull calves went to Delaney Herefords, Lake Benton, Minn. The calves were sired by JDH AH Benton 8G ET, JDH AH Standout 16G ET andChurchill Sheriff 900G ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,183 pounds with a 3.55 WDA.
