Hereford Champions Named at the 2023 National Western Stock Show

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Herefords took Denver, Colo., by storm in the Yards and on the Hill at the National Western Stock Show, Jan. 13-14. Judges Donnie Robertson, Yukon, Okla., and Miles Shout, Piedmont, Okla., sorted the 36-head of bulls and 90-head of heifers in the open show, Saturday, Jan. 14. A total of 223 Hereford cattle were exhibited throughout the two-day event. 

“We have always been impressed by this breed, both its cattle and its people, and it’s an honor to be called to judge a show of this level,” Robertson remarked. 

Bull show 

Grand champion horned bull, BR GKB Winchester 1314, first won the senior bull calf division. Owned by Barber Ranch, Channing, Texas, and GKB Cattle, Desdemona, Texas, the winning entry is a Sept. 19, 2021, son of BR Belle Air E133 ET. The reserve champion horned bull and champion yearling bull title went to H Front Runner 1495 ET, owned by 4 J Farms, Cabot, Ark. He is a Feb. 6, 2021, son of H The Profit 8426 ET. 

Winning grand champion polled bull and the yearling bull division was GKB Cattle, and Dylan Kottkamp, Clayton, Ind., with EKS DWK B26 Final Chapter J10. He is a March 17, 2021, son of CRR 719 Catapult 109. Reserve champion polled bull and reserve champion yearling bull division honors went to Stellpflug Cattle Co. LLC, Glenrock, Wyo., with H WMS Thomas County 1443 ET. He is a Jan. 27, 2021, son of EF Beef Resolute CEO.

Female show 

Grand champion polled female and champion intermediate yearling division honors went to Paige Lemenager, Hudson, Ill., with HAWK Myla 39J ET. She is a May 21, 2021, daughter of KLD RW Marksman D87 ET. Kynsleigh, Sage and Kashlyn Krebs, Gordon, Neb., claimed the reserve champion polled female and champion spring yearling female title with K Jemma 149 ET. She is a March 5, 2021, daughter of SR Dominate 308F ET. 

Kinnick Paulsen, Preston, Iowa, exhibited the grand champion horned female, HAWK Murphy 14J ET. The March 26, 2021, daughter of KLD RW Marksman D87 ET first claimed spring yearling division honors. Cierra, Claire and Cricket Collins, Chattanooga, Okla., won the reserve champion horned female and the junior heifer calf banner with H BL Carmel 223 ET. She is a Feb. 4, 2022, daughter of UPS Entice 9365 ET. 

Other awards 

At the conclusion of the show, GKB Cattle, and Hannah and Hadley Harrison, Montague, Calif., were named polled premier exhibitors. GKB Cattle, and Chesney Doubet, Belgrade, Mont, were named horned premier exhibitors. Kynsleigh Krebs, Gordon, Neb., was named horned premier breeder and Hawk Livestock, Earlville, Ill., was named polled premier breeder.
