MADISON, Wis. — Suter Clark, Gretna,Va., exhibited the grand champion steer at the 2023 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), “Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash,” on July 12, in Madison, Wis. Lauren, Brady and Nicholas Jones, Darlington, Wis., exhibited the reserve grand champion. 

The steer show was sponsored by Upstream Ranch, Taylor, Neb. Blaine Rodgers, Savannah, Mo., sorted 108 steers to find the champion. 

Clarks’ grand champion steer and champion division II steer, GSF Thor K61 ET, is a March 17, 2022 son of CH High Roller 756 ET. He weighed 1,373 pounds. Reserve honors went to the Jones family, with GSF Tucker K33 ET. Weighing in at 1,330 pounds and winning reserve champion in division II, Jones’ entry is a March 19, 2022 son of CH High Roller 756 ET.

The champion bred-and-owned steer was awarded to Sage Lawrence, Avilla, Ind., SEL K-Money 212K. Winning division II of the bred-and-owned show, he is an April 3, 2022 son of Purple Sleepy Joe 80H ET, weighing in at 1,307 pounds. The reserve champion bred-and-owned steer went to Dustin and Wesley Denton, Blue Rapids, Kan., SH/WD American Time 212K ET. Denton’s champion division I steer is a May 29, 2022 son of T/R BPF AmericanClassic 561CET weighing in at 1,240 pounds.

“There’s endless amounts of things you can say about the Hereford breed, the junior program and the history of this great event that they put on,” Rodgers said, before selecting his grand champion steer. “The steer show has lived up to everything I thought it would be in terms of quality.”
