DENVER — Baumgarten Cattle Co., Belfield, N.D., took top honors in the Hereford carload show on Friday, Jan. 17, during the 2020 National Western Stock Show in Denver. Coyote Ridge Ranch, La Salle, Colo., topped the pen-of-three bull show and Barber Ranch, Channing, Texas, won the pen-of-three female show in the Denver Yards.
Brent Meeks, Taylor, Neb.; Brent Mrnak, Bowman, N.D.; and Troy Thomas, Harrod, S.D., evaluated the Yard shows, which included two carloads, 37 bull pens and 27 heifer pens. A total of 212 Herefords competed in the Yards, while a standing-room-only audience looked on.
The champion carload of junior bull calves exhibited by Baumgarten Cattle Co., Belfield, N.D., tipped the scales at an average weight of 1,140 pounds and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.45 pounds. The group was sired by Haroldson’s Upgrade T100, TFR KR Sundance Kid 1448 E, LSW WCC About Time X06, CRR 109 On Point 559 ET and BCC Dominator 619D. The group had an average scrotal measurement (SC) of 34.8 cm.
The reserve grand champion carload and reserve champion junior bull calf carload was exhibited by Hoffman Herefords, Thedford, Neb. The group was sired by NJW 135U 10Y Hometown 27, UPS Sensation 2296 ET, CL 1 Domino 7131E 1ET, H FHF Advance 628 ET, Gerber Anodyne 001A, BEHM 100W Cuba 504C, LCX Perfecto 11B ET and H Montgomery 7437 ET. The average weight of the load was 1,193 pounds with a calculated WDA of 3.34 pounds and an average scrotal measurement of 35.3 cm.
Champion honors for the bull pen-of-three show went to Coyote Ridge Ranch, La Salle, Colo., with the group first winning the junior bull calf division. The calves were sired by NJW 73S W18 Homegrown 8 and NJW 135U 10Y Hometown 27. They averaged 1,308 pounds and had a calculated WDA of 4.00 pounds with an average scrotal measurement of 36.7 cm.
Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, won champion pen of junior bull calves before being selected reserve grand champion pen with a group sired by BR Belle Air 6011 and HAPP BK Valor 37C ET. The pen weighed an average of 1,358 pounds and calculated a 3.71 WDA with a 36.5 cm average scrotal measurement.
The grand champion pen of females and champion junior yearling heifer pen was exhibited by Barber Ranch, Channing, Texas. The group was sired by NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D E and posted an average weight of 1,028 pounds with a 2.85 WDA.
Pérez Cattle Co., Nara Visa, N.M., showed the reserve grand champion pen of three females and the champion junior yearling heifer calf division. These heifers were sired by NJW 79Z 22Z Mighty 49C ET with an average weight of 1,515 pounds and a WDA of 2.19.
