Need to work off that fast food you ate from driving across the country to attend the best junior national? Do you love long walks across fairgrounds while taking in the sights and sounds of a cattle show? Do you have a competitive nature and a love for running? Do your children need to work off all the caffeine that is making them hyper?
The “Herefords on the Hill” 5K race is a perfect way for all individuals attending the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) to get involved in the many competitions that the event offers, outside of the showring. I was so excited that something related to fitness and being active was implemented at the junior national. The 5K is a unique way to meet new people and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The race is set for Monday, July 8 with runners taking their marks at 7 a.m. The course will take participants from the Yards to the Hill and around the historic National Western Stock Show facility.
I have been active for as long as I can remember, and I love that something so important to myself and others, is available to participate in at the junior national. The race for me has been a way to do something active while at junior national while competing in something that pushes me to a limit. My favorite part of the 5K is that it is open to all people, no matter their age or involvement with the show. There are different age divisions so that people are competing with people their own age. The top runners will all receive special Hereford hide medals and racers are given a bib with their own number and can be given their time/result at the end of the race. Runners are also given t-shirts with their entry and are able to sport it as they compete in the 3.12-mile-long race.
The National Junior Hereford Association board of directors and volunteers will be spread out throughout the race to cheer on the runners and provide them with water and support to keep pushing to the finish line. Not only do the juniors benefit by getting exercise, but the funds that come from the 5K are given to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America to support leadership and educational opportunities for Hereford youth.
