Star Lake, Colyer Take Top Honors in Hereford Yard Show
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla., reigned victorious in the Hereford carload show capturing win number 12 and the coveted bronze trophy at the 2011 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver Jan. 14. Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, topped the pen of three bull show and Baumgarten Cattle Co., Belfield, N.D., won the pen of three female show in the Denver Yards.
Greg Shaw, Caldwell, Idaho, Mark Aiken, Iberia, Mo., and Cody Lowderman, Macomb, Ill., teamed up to evaluate the Yard shows which included eight carloads, 31 bull pens and 13 heifer pens. Shaw said the quality of the 2011 Yards show was impressive.
“It was a pleasure to evaluate such a tremendous group of bulls and heifers, from top to bottom,” he said. “You can see why the Hereford breed is regaining market share, because the quality of cattle here today is certainly going to move our industry forward.”
Star Lake Cattle Ranch’s champion carload of junior bull calves topped the scales at an average weight of 1,318 lb., and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.78. The group was sired by Remitall Online 122L; HF 4L Beyond 36N; Go 3196 Advance S109; RVP STAR 533P Can-Am ET 57U and STAR Bright Future 533P ET. On show day the group posted average expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 4.9; weaning weight (WW) 59; yearling weight (YW) 98; milk (MM) 22; and milk and growth (M&G) 51. The group had an average scrotal measurement of 35.7 cm.
Reserve grand champion carload honors went to the champion yearling carload of bulls exhibited by Mrnak Herefords, Bowman, N.D. The group was sired by MH Rambo 717 ET; MH Monument 567; MH Dakota Lad 6238 1ET; MH Monument 3147 and Remitall Keynote 20X. The average weight of the load was 2,083 lb. and they calculated a WDA of 3.15. The average EPDs of the group were BW 5.1; WW 56; YW 92; MM 23; and M&G 51. They measured a scrotal measurement average of 40.3 cm.
Standing in the 2011 pen show spotlight was Colyer Herefords with its pen that first claimed the champion junior bull calf division. The calves were sired by UPS TC Nitro 1ET, averaged 1,252 lb., and had a calculated WDA of 3.63 with an average scrotal measurement of 35.5 cm. The group’s EPDs were BW 3.8; WW 63; YW 99; MM 17; and M&G 49.
Jensen Bros., Courtland, Kan., won the spring calf division before being selected reserve grand champion pen with a group by Beckley 758P Ontime 934S; CRR About Time 743 and KJ HVH 33N Redeem 485T ET. The average EPDs on the bulls were BW 4.0; WW 57; YW 88; MM 17; and M&G 46. The pen weighed an average of 1,145 lb. and calculated a 3.72 WDA with a 35.7 cm average scrotal measurement.
The grand champion pen of females exhibited by Baumgarten Cattle Co. was sired by TFR High Cotton 328 ET and HH Advance 286M 1ET. The group posted average EPDs of BW 3.9; WW 49; YW 80; MM 19; and M&G 44. K7 Herefords, Lockridge, Iowa, showed the reserve champion pen of three females. These heifers were sired by C-S Gran Torino 8172 ET; K7 2072 Lad 618; CJH Harland 408; UPS Domino 3027. The group posted EPDs of BW 1.7; WW 51; YW 80; MM 26; and M&G 52.
