McMillan, Compton Win Owned Horned Heifer Honors at Junior National Hereford Expo
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Lauren McMillan, Ohio, Ill., topped the 181-head horned owned heifer show at the 11th annual VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo in Indianapolis July10. The grand champion, RRR L18 Penelope 0509 ET, was bred by River Ridge Ranch & Cattle Co., Durand, Ill. The reserve grand champion, MSC Ramseys Sylvia Powerload, was bred and shown by Matthew Compton, Greenfield, Ind.
Judge Cheryl Linthicum, Comfort, Texas, said, “To say I like these heifers would be an understatement,” before choosing the winner. She also complimented McMillan’s heifer, saying, “I love this heifer, because she’s real. She has a lot of shape, and she tracks well.”
Before being named champion horned heifer, Penelope won division XI. She is a March 2009 daughter of GO Excel L18 and showed with EPDs of birth weight (BW) 3.5, weaning weight (WW) 49, yearling weight (YW) 77, milk (MM) 28 and milk and growth (M&G) 52.
Compton’s reserve champion horned heifer also won division VIII and is a June 2009 daughter of AA Powerload. She showed with EPDs of BW 3.0, WW 54, YW 81, MM 25 and M&G 52.

Division I reserve: Austin Breeding, Miami, Texas, with B&C Ms Alberta 0131 by Alberta Lad 3E.
Division III champion: Hadley Ewing, Fordland, Mo., with BIG 2913 Xena 7X by CH Enuff Prophet 2913.
Division III reserve champion: Kandi Knippa with BAER Creek Easy on Eyes 110XET by GO Excel L18.
Division V champion: Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas, with BR Gabrielle 9124 ET by DM BR Sooner.
Division V reserve champion: Haley Hudson, Harrison, Ark., with HVR AC Victorias Secret 957 ET by GO 3196 Advance S109.
Division VIII reserve champion: Harley Rogers, Hamilton, Texas, with LCC RJL Suzie 901 by BR DM Bodacious ET.
Division XI reserve champion: Blake Tucker, North Platte, Neb., with TCC Miss Gracie 94 ET by K 64H Ribstone Lad 157K.
Division XII champion: Kirbie Day, Waxahachie, Texas, with GH 7101 Jayce 330W by UPS JT Neon 7101 1ET.
Division XII reserve champion: Elizabeth Rosson, Milford, Texas, with GKB EJE B627 Breeze B930 ET by GKB Downtown B627 ET.
Division XVIII champion: Brady Jensen, Courtland, Kan., with KJ BJ 325S Bridgett 857U by KJ 2403 Recruit 966R.
Division XVIII reserve champion: Kati Fehlman, Junction City, Kan., with BR Corinna 8175 ET by BR Moler ET.
