Day, Beck Grab Bred-and-Owned Female Titles at Junior National Hereford Expo

INDIANAPOLIS — Kirbie Day, Waxahachie, Texas, and her heifer KLD 3060 Penny D95 ET came out on top of the 166 exhibited in the bred-and-owned heifer show at the 2010 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Indianapolis July 8. Cody Beck, Bainbridge, Ind., and BP CB Patsy Enuff 54W ET claimed the reserve champion title.

Judge John Rayfield, College Station, Texas, commended the juniors on the tough competition and encouraged them by saying, “These heifers are sound and functional; they’ve got to get out and move and be sound. Heifers need muscle and shape, while keeping their style and eye appeal. When it’s all said and done, they need to look like females.”
Day’s heifer, an April 2009 daughter of BR Lansing 3060, best combined those traits. She showed with expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 4.4, weaning weight (WW) 59, yearling weight (YW) 91, milk (MM) 17 and milk & growth (M&G) 46.
Another spring yearling claimed the reserve champion banner after placing second in division V. Beck’s CH Enuff Prophet 3913 daughter showed with EPDs of BW 5.6, WW 47, YW 80, MM 24 and M&G 47.
The champion junior AI heifer title went to Emily Sugg, Berryville Ark., with Sugg Kilo 92 by NS Lakes Kilo 002. Karly Biddle, Walcott, Iowa, and Double K Lucky Lady claimed reserve champion AI heifer honors. Lucky Lady is by NS Lakes Kilo 002. This division is for heifers that are a result of participating in the NJHA Junior AI program and allows youth to receive free semen and certificates.
