Shock & Awe Named Supreme Hereford; Champions Selected at 2010 National Western Hereford Show

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­– Hereford excitement abounded from the Yards to the Hill at the National Western Stock Show Jan. 13-16 in Denver. A total of 647 head were exhibited throughout the four-day event. There were 342 head in the open show, 89 in the junior show, 34 pens of bulls, 18 heifer pens and six carloads.
 
The Hereford activities got underway with Kurt Thomas, Gold Creek, Mont., judging the junior show Jan. 13. Pen and carload competition followed Jan. 14. Herefords filled the Stadium Arena on the Hill with the open bull show Jan. 15 and the female show Jan. 16.
 
Gary Buchholz, assisted by his wife, Kathy, Bardwell, Texas, judged the open show and said he was impressed with the quality. “The Hereford breed has never forgotten the beef industry,” he said. “These cattle have been real.”
 
 
Kathy added, “The Hereford breed has a tremendous genetic base and a tremendous amount of information available to the beef industry.”
 
STAR TCF Shock & Awe 158W ET, owned by Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla.; Buffalo Bend Farm, Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; TCF & Co., Petoskey, Mich.; and Tennessee River Music Inc., Fort Payne, Ala., captured the coveted supreme champion trophy after winning the grand champion polled bull title. The supreme award is sponsored by Four L Hereford Farm, Atwood, Tenn., and is awarded in memory of Tom Lane Sr.
 
The Feb. 5, 2009, son of STAR Bright Future 533P ET posted an impressive set of expected progeny differences (EPDs) on show day including birth weight (BW) 2.0; weaning weight (WW) 59; yearling weight (YW) 90; milk (MM) 21; and milk and growth (M&G) 51. Shock & Awe weighed 1,417 lb. and has a calculated weight per day of age (WDA) of 4.12 lb.
 
Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas, captured the grand champion horned bull title. BR Currency 8144 ET by DM BR Sooner was first named champion fall bull calf. He had EPDs of BW 2.0; WW 54: YW 83; MM 25; and M&G 53. Currency weighed in at 1,653 lb. and had a WDA of 3.34.
 
Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, and Albin Farms, Newman, Ill., claimed the banner for reserve champion polled bull with C New Era ETby UPS TCC Nitro 1ET. The champion spring bull weighed in at 1,138 lb. with a a WDA of 3.77 lb. His EPDs read BW 4.3; WW 57; YW 92; MM 22; and M&G 50.
 
Churchill Frontier 9137W ET, owned by Churchill Cattle Co., Manhattan, Mont., and Hoffman Herefords, Thedford, Neb., captured the reserve champion horned bull title. This son of CRR About Time 743, first named champion junior bull calf, weighed in at 1,266 lb. and had a 3.76 WDA. His EPDs read BW 2.9; WW 48; YW 82; MM 23; and M&G 47.
 
National Junior Hereford Association members outshined the competition in the polled female show. Blake Tucker, North Platte, Neb., led his polled spring yearling female to win grand champion honors, just six months after being named champion polled heifer at the 2009 Junior National Hereford Expo. TCC Miss Shelby 82 ET is a daughter of Ankonian Midas 72. The heifer showed with EPDs of BW 4.2; WW 53; YW 84; MM 20; and M&G 46. Shelby also took champion polled female honors in the NWSS junior show.
 
Winning the horned open female show was Karlee Osborne, Sheridan, Ill., with H Poetic Justice 8042 by TH JWR SOP 16G 57G Tundra 63N. The champion spring yearling heifer showed with EPDs of BW 4.3; WW 57; YW 101; MM 19; and M&G 48. Poetic Justice was named champion horned female in the NWSS junior Hereford show on Wednesday.
 
Standing in the reserve champion polled heifer spotlight – just as at the 2009 Junior National Hereford Expo – was Kasey Herman, Skiatook, Okla., with STAR KKH SSF Olivia 15U ET. Olivia is now co-owned with Star Lake Cattle Ranch and BJ Herman & Sons, Edgerton, Ohio. The Jan. 5, 2008, daughter of Remitall Online 122L was first named champion polled junior yearling female and boasted EPDs of BW 4.4; WW 58; YW 100; MM 19; and M&G 48.
Drew Perez, Nara Visa, N.M., and his reserve champion spring yearling horned female, C&M New Mexico Lady 8040 by KJ BJ Bounty Hunter 741P, were selected reserve champion horned female. Perez’s heifer posted EPDs of BW 3.7; WW 54; YW 77; MM 28; and M&G 55.
 
The Perez family also exhibited the first-place horned get-of-sire with a group sired by KJ BJ Bounty Hunter 741P. In the horned show Adams Hirsche, High River, Alberta, Canada, was awarded premier exhibitor and Colyer Herefords was premier breeder.
 
At the conclusion of the polled show, Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla., secured premier breeder, premier exhibitor and best six head titles. Star Lake also exhibited the first-place polled get-of-sire with a group sired by STAR Bright Future 533P.
 
In the junior show, reserve polled female honors went to STAR KKH SSF Mirror Image 286W, owned by Mallorie Phelps, Grandview, Texas. She is a March 2009 daughter of MSU TCF Titleist 2T ET. Mitchell Tucker, North Platte, Neb., exhibited the reserve champion horned female, TCC Miss Lexus 84 ET. Miss Lexus is a March 2008 daughter of SLDK Poseidon R09 ET.
